Phone Solicitors
Before they get very far into their pitch, say firmly "Stop. No one at this number responds to telephone solicitations. Do you have a do-not-call list?" (The law requires them to keep one.) Wait for the affirmative answer, then say "Add my number to that list." Then hang up. You owe them nothing, not even courtesy.
Stopping Junk Mail
First-class mail. If it has first-class postage, mark it "refused: return to sender". Circle the postage and drop it in any mail box.
Credit offers. Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax collect information about you. They sell that information to any bidder. They even try to sell it back to you. To get yourself off their lists, call each of the credit-reporting bureaus (numbers below) and ask to "opt out." They'll ask for your name, address, and social security number - which they already have - to be sure you are who you claim to be - as if there aren't dozens of other people who know your name, address, and social security number.
Publisher's Clearinghouse. To stop sweepstakes mailings, call 800-645-9242 or e-mail pch@ant.net. Give them all the name-address combinations you want deleted from their lists.
Others. Write to:
Direct Marketing Association
Mail Preference Service
PO Box 9008
Farmingdale NY 11735-9008
Give them your name and full address and request "activate the preference service." This will eliminate your name from some lists for up to five years.
