Cora Vaught (in Germany, her ancestors were named Vogt) was born 26 January 1861 or 1862 at Chelsea (near El Dorado, Kansas.
Sam and Cora were married on 26 January 1884. It was both her birthday and his. In the ensuing 21 years, they raised nine children:
* Agnes Davis' husband was a Vought, not a Vaught. Like Agnes, he may have been descended from German Vogts. (Vogt, by the way, means steward, bailiff, or governor.) Alice Davis' middle name was Vaught, from her mother's family name. If Alice, rather than Agnes, had married Hiram Vought, her name would have become Alice Vaught Vought. In 1893, Sam staked a claim in the newly-opened "Cherokee Strip" in Oklahoma. In 1900, the family returned to Chelsea, Kansas (near El Dorado). In 1906, Sam and Cora and their children homesteaded at Talbot, Alberta. Sam farmed, operated a general store, and founded the post office and school district. The first home they built there burned, so they built another. In 1912, they moved with their younger children to Earlimart, California (between Bakersfield and Fresno). The older children stayed in Alberta, and raised their families in Canada. Later Sam and Cora settled in California's Owens Valley and finally in Los Angeles.
Sam and Cora both died at Los Angeles: he on 24 April 1939, she on 29 November 1940.
More to Come
This page will eventually include photos of Sam and Cora and some of their descendants. I intend to gather biographies of all the children of Samuel Davis and Cora Vaught, plus information about Alberta and other places the Davis family lived in.
