One of the memorable things about coming of age in the '60s was the ubiquity of "top-40" radio: AM stations that played the same 40 best-selling songs all week, except for the occasional "oldie" -- a record more than a few months old. Aside from a few Plymouths that had 45-rpm record changers (!) built into the dash, AM radio was the only music we had when we drove, or parked. In Bakersfield, where I went to high school, it was KAFY, where the morning show was called "KAFY Coffee Club" and the afternoon DJ was Al Anthony. My friends and I liked to drive around with the windows down and the radio blaring, and wherever we went, kids were listening to KAFY. (OK, not always: sometimes somebody would be listening to Herb Henson's KUZZ, the country station.) Most of the records were really awful, but we sang along anyway, and it was fun to spot people in other cars singing the same dumb songs we were. I miss that. When we were lucky enough to get away from Bakersfield for a while, we'd find the local top-40 stations: in San Francisco we had KYA and KFRC, in Los Angeles KRLA and KFWB. Passing through Stockton, there was always KSTN. Can't remember the one in Fresno. When I went off to college in Sacramento, the choice there was KROY or KXOA -- until I got an FM radio and switched to KZAP. The best sing-along-while-driving record? That would have to be
